"Yokwe Bartowe must be the most honest film I have ever seen. Raw, down-to-earth and true to reality,
it becomes a statement about the Marshallese identity: humble, yet charming; troubled,
yet smiling; magical, yet believable... Many Hollywood directors indeed have a lot to learn
from Niedenthal, Chutaro and their crew."

-Peter Sutoris, Filmmaker

COUNTRY

THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY:
A Tale of Color and Development

Directed and Produced by Peter Sutoris

67 minutes (2012)

A documentary about development and social change in the Marshall Islands.

I regard Peter Sutoris' film, The Undiscovered Country, as essential viewing for those interested in development and education in the developing world. It is peculiarly relevant in its exploration of the clash between tradition and indigenous ways of living and acting as a community member versus the forces of colonialism, modernity, and globalism. The film's originality and balanced perspective involves the ingenious use of animation, black and white as well as color photography, Marshallese music and local singers, and a wide variety of viewpoints both Marshallese and Western. It is a thought-provoking and unsentimental investigation of life in the Marshall Islands currently, but it speaks to worlds beyond this tiny island nation.

- Andrew Garrod, Professor Emeritus of Education, former chair of the Education Department, Dartmouth College

I found The Undiscovered Country enormously engaging and thought provoking. I loved how this film cut to the bones of the characters who live in a culture-jumbled society on an island in the middle of the Pacific.

- Jack Niedenthal, filmmaker & Trust Liaison for the People of Bikini

The film doesn’t offer answers, but it raises many questions about the impact of western culture in the Marshall Islands. The interviewees have much to comment on this subject and local viewers, especially, will find it both an entertaining and thought-provoking film to watch.

- Giff Johnson, Editor, Marshall Islands Journal
